Alexandrine Bartlett
Alex fell in love with pastel during a workshop with Albert Handell almost
a decade ago. The subsequent years of working with pastel dramatically
transformed her paintings and focused an art career spanning three
decades, and styles ranging from enormous abstract oils to tightly
rendered dry brush watercolors into its current form. Pastel's versatility
and directness gives Alex what she enjoys most about painting:
line, color, and immediacy.
The interplay of light, shadow, and atmosphere has engaged me
since my earliest memories. My fascination with the sculptural effect
of light and the influence it has on color, underpins all my work.
Translating these qualities into a two dimensional image, while
striving for a personal visual language, is my on-going and lifelong quest.
