Dick McEvoy
Dick McEvoy was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and lived most of his formative
years in Duxbury, Massachusetts.
"I love to paint because I only paint what moves and excites me at a
particular point in time. My art is not 'reporting' and it's not 'interpreting'
...it is simply my expression of pleasure."
He paints primarily impressionistic landscapes in pastel and oil. He is a signature
artist member of Pastel Society of America, the Connecticut Pastel Society and the Pastel
Painters Society of Cape Cod, and is President of the Connecticut Pastel Society.
Dick has his work in 160+ private and corporate collections. In the spring of 2007 Dick
has a One-Man Show at the Discovery Museum in Bridgeport CT; and he has paintings going
to Art du Pastel's International exhibit in Normandy France, and to Taipei Taiwan. He has
had work exhibited at Pastel Society of America, Connecticut Pastel Society, Audubon Artists,
Kent Art Association, Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod, Pastel Society of Maine, and
the Ridgewood Art Association. In 2003, Dick took part in the Biennale Internationale
dell'Arte Contemporanea in Florence, Italy - a ten-day exhibition of nearly 900 artists
from 72 countries.
"I love to do value sketches as I travel and then turn them into finished
paintings in my studio."
At Brown University, he majored in Psychology, and took courses at R.I.S.D. While
at Wharton Business School he studied with Violette DeMazia at The Barnes Foundation.
He is mostly self-taught, but is quick to acknowledge the invaluable assistance of
his two mentors: Herman Margulies and Frank Federico. Dick and Frank have painted on
location together for the last 10+ years.
Dick paints on location ("plein-air") whenever possible, but because of his
schedule, more often than not relies on value-sketches on-site and photos to be
converted to paintings in his studio. He had a feature article in the Pastel
Journal (August '05) and was chosen to be included in two recently published
books: Pure Color, Best in Pastel III and L'Art du Pastel en France ('06).
