Phill Thompson
An award-winning pastel painter, Phill Thompson is a self-described “illusionist.” He doesn’t do photo realism. He does aura. His approach is KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid). Addressing a simple composition with a limited palette, he paints spots of color, leaving it to the viewer to mentally complete the image and experience the essence of the thing. His favorite subjects are boats-at-rest and pastry. He doesn't do flowers.
Since taking up pastel in 2001, Phill's major awards include:
- Best in Show: Chatham Creative Arts Center (CAC)- Leo Diehl show
- 2nd Runner Up: CAC- --Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod, “For Pastel Only" show
- First in Pastel: Cape Cod Art Association- All New England show and 4 Open Juried shows
- CAC- 2 Open Juried shows
Phill is a signature member of the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod and a member of the Cape Cod Plein-Air Painters. He has studied with the legendary teacher "Sir Charles" Sovek; a number of South Shore artists Roz Farbush and Mary Lizotte; the Cape Cod pastel-painter Rosalie Nadeau; and, most importantly, his wife, the artist Merylle-Lee Thompson.
