Autumn Trees

Pastel on La Carte pastel paper
11" x 15"

I often paint the intense colors of the Autumn Landscape. In this pastel I tried to capture the contrast between the cooler shadows and the warm colors of Autumn. I often paint in this area. The rolling hills add a directional flow to the composition.

Late one evening this scene captured my attention. The sun was behind the trees, the wild flowers in the foreground, and there was a special rhythm created with the contrasting colors and shapes.

The western New York landscape provides many sources of inspiration. This is a plein air piece in which I focused on the contrasting color of the trees and grasses. The tiny wild flowers set in the wheat grasses always adds a little interest to the composition.

Kathleen McDonnell is a signature member of the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod and the Pastel Society of the West Coast as well as many local art organizations. She has received local and national awards. Select pieces of Kathleen's work are part of the Albright Knox Members Rental Gallery in Buffalo, New York.

Local landscapes are predominately her sources of inspiration. She sometimes paints in a series to explore her subject at different times of day, year, or different view points. She focuses on color, composition and the landscape.

I try to capture the spirit, strength, beauty, and power that exists in the landscape through light and color. This process captures the mood and not just the place.
